Job Creation Fueled by Call Center

There is good news for those in North Carolina looking for a job.

Covation LLC, based in Atlanta, plans to open a call center in Hickory, N.C. The company, which serves business telecommunications customers, plans to employ 913 workers within the next two years. If the company follows through on its employment and investment goals, it will receive a $600,000 state grant, according to an article from the the City of Hickory.

The new jobs will pay about $34,500 per year plus benefits. The average wage in Catawba County, where Hickory is located, is $33,300 per year. The call center plans to open by April 2009.

“This is an exciting way to close 2008 in Hickory and Catawba County as Covation makes an announcement that will bring 913 new jobs to our community,” Mayor Rudy Wright said in the article. “Hickory, along with our Catawba County Economic Development Corporation and Catawba County partners have worked together to find key industries that would flourish in the Hickory Metro and diversification to back-office and support centers made the top of the list.

"We are thankful that Covation chose Hickory as we have smart and hard-working people in the Hickory Metro that are qualified for the technical support, billing, and customer service jobs,” Wright added.

The added jobs will be a welcome relief to the state’s economy, which has suffered among the current economy as much as the rest of the nation. According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, North Carolina had an unemployment rate of 7.9 percent during November 2008, up from 7.1 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.

North Carolina had a total non-farm employment of 4,104,900 workers during November, down from 4,150,900 workers during October and a decrease of 1.7 percent from last year. The state’s professional and business services industry employed 482,900 workers during November, down from 496,800 workers during October and a decrease of 4.9 percent from last year.
