A decline in visitor spending could negatively affect those with or seeking Las Vegas casino jobs.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority‘s annual Visitor Profile Study for 2009 found that local visitors did not gamble as much and spent less money on hotel rooms last year. In addition, visitors also spent less money on casino shows and at shopping malls and restaurants.
Of the 3,600 respondents, a five-year high of 15 percent said their primary reason for visiting Las Vegas was to see friends or relatives, which is an increase from 11 percent during 2008. These visitors typically spend less money than those who come to Las Vegas mainly to gamble or attend conventions and business meetings.
High-spending conven and business meeting attendees accounted for only 9 percent of Las Vegas visitors, which is a decrease from 12 percent during 2008. Other popular reasons for visiting the city last year were vacation or pleasure at 40 percent and gambling at 13 percent; with fewer visitors coming to the city for other business, special events and weddings, or just passing through.
Other key findings include:
- Hotel rooms that weren’t booked as part of a package cost an average of $75.78 per day, which is a decrease from $101.68 during 2008. The actual cost for hotel rooms booked by all means last year averaged $92.93, which is down from $119.19 during 2008.

- About 64 percent of visitors attended shows last year, which is a decrease from 72 percent during 2008. On a per-trip basis, visitors spend an average of $39.87 on shows, down from $51.64 the previous year.
- No-cover hotel bars and lounges were visited by 43 percent of respondents, down from 49 percent during 2008. Hotel nightclubs charging a cover were visited by 5 percent of those surveyed, which is the same as during 2008.
