While the local unemployment rate for December has yet to be released, Texas as a whole saw it’s rate increase from 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent, which is still lower than the national average of 9.4 percent. The San Antonio area had an unemployment rate of 7.6 percent in November.
Unfortunately, overall employment in the San Antonio-New Braunfels area took a hit during December, dropping from 840,400 workers to 838,800 workers. However, the area’s workforce is .8 percent larger than it was the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Only four industries added jobs on a monthly basis during December. The trade, transportation, and utilities industry grew the most, adding 1,600 workers over the month.
The education and health services industry added 400 jobs, while the financial activities industry grew by 200 workers, and the manufacturing industry added 100 jobs. Employment in the mining and logging industry remained even over the month with 3,800 jobs.
In terms of monthly job losses, the professional and business services industry fared the worst, losing 1,600 workers during December. That was followed by the leisure and hospitality industry, which lost 1,200 members of its workforce.
Four other industries saw a monthly decrease in employment, including: government by 600 jobs; construction by 200 jobs; other services by 200 jobs; and information by 100 jobs.
The majority of industries added workers on a yearly basis during December. The mining and logging industry fared the best by far, as its workforce increased by 15.2 percent between December 2009 and December 2010.
Other industries that saw an over-the-year increase in employment include:
- Government by 1.6 percent
- Financial activities by 1.4 percent
- Education and health services by 1.2 percent
- Trade, transportation, and utilities by 1.1 percent
- Professional and business services by 1 percent
- Leisure and hospitality by .6 percent
Employment in the manufacturing industry remained steady over the year with 41,900 jobs. Only three industries experienced yearly employment declines during December, including information by 5.3 percent, other services by 2 percent; and construction by .2 percent.
